In 2009, the approximate population of Bristol was 433,100, with a greater urban area of 1,070,000 in 2007. It is the 8th largest city in the UK and is the informal capital of the West Country of England. The Royal Charter was received in 1155 and later in 1373 it was granted county status. Somerset and Gloucestershire are the counties on its borders and the historical Bath, Gloucester and Cardiff are its closeby cities. Slave business was established amongst the UK and the Americas in the seventeenth century until its abolition in 1807. The Victorian engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and the city have a strong link because Brunkel planned and built the Bristol Temple Meads Station and the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Later, in 2002, Brunel was voted as one of the most foremost people in British history.
